As Good As It Gets...

About Okiru

okiru® (written as 起きる in Japanese) means to wake up; but for us, it’s more than just a name. It’s an intention.

Before we tell you how it all started, we want to talk about what pulled us into this world of coffee in the first place.

“That romance is nowhere as vividly encapsulated as in that moment when a pile of hard, almost odorless gray-green seeds is suddenly and magically transformed into the fragrant vehicle of our dreams, reveries, and conversation. To be the magician waving the wand of transformation makes that metamorphosis all the more stirring and resonant.”
Kenneth Davids, Home Coffee Roasting: Romance and Revival

We didn’t just fall in love with coffee. We fell in love with the process. With the work behind the cup. With the idea that something so raw and unremarkable could be turned into something deeply human.

How It All Started

It all started with a pursuit to find the best cup of coffee, something which is rightly balanced.

In a world where specialty coffee is the heartthrob of tier-A cities, representing a fusion of artistry, self-expression, soulful communities, and vibrant culture, we believed, and fiercely, that every city, big or small, deserves its own coffee culture. A place where stories brew as rich and fresh as beans. A place for a deeper caffeine-connection.

Our beginnings were gloriously unglamorous. The kitchen was our lab and claypots were our roasters. Every batch was an act of rebellion against convention, a love letter to authenticity. Sipping experimental brews that sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t.

Friends and family became our first believers. Their support was always more than polite nods, a spark that lit our fire. How do you stop when people crave coffee from you? After years of sourcing and roasting, we finally decided to give our dreams a version 2.0. What started as a messy, heart-filled experiment in a small corner of our lives, began to evolve into a larger movement. And that's how okiru® was born, straight out of bold dreams.

How it all started

How It Came to Life

We started sourcing green coffee beans from small, ethical farms across India. Roasting them in small batches, learning their character, and pairing them with intentional design, we created okiru® — not just a café, but a ritual.

Starting okiru® wasn’t a quick decision—it was built one step at a time. Once we knew we didn’t want to just serve coffee but actually understand it, we went deep.

We started sourcing green beans from small farms across India—farms where we could trace the process, meet the growers, and see the effort behind each harvest.

We spent months learning the craft of roasting. Every bean reacts differently—some need patience, others heat, some respond to subtle changes in timing.

We set up our own in-house roastery because we wanted full control. No shortcuts. No compromises.

At the same time, we were designing the space. We didn’t want it to feel like a typical café. We wanted it to feel like a pause. A reset. Somewhere you could breathe, slow down, and enjoy coffee without noise or rush.

It wasn’t easy. There were delays, mistakes, and plenty of second-guessing. But every step—every late-night roast, every cupping session, every conversation with a grower—brought us closer to what we had imagined: A place where coffee feels personal.

That’s how okiru® came to life. Not just with beans and brewing—but with intention, attention, and a lot of trial and error.

Okiru Cafe

Why It Exists

At okiru®, we exist to awaken more than just sleepy eyes. We exist to awaken possibility.

We believe that great coffee can create everyday moments of magic bringing people together, sparking creativity, and nurturing slow, meaningful rituals in a fast-paced world.

We’re here to make specialty coffee more inclusive, more human, and more rooted in community. Not just something exclusive to niche cafés, but something you can truly call your own.

Why Okiru Exists
Okiru Cafe

Where We’re Going

okiru® was never meant to be one café and done. The goal has always been bigger—to grow a community of people who care about what they consume, how it’s made, and the people behind it.

We want to open more spaces that feel like this one—quietly thoughtful, quality-driven, and built around connection. Spaces where craft matters. Where conversations aren’t rushed. Where the coffee is personal.

We’ll keep roasting in-house. Keep sourcing responsibly. Keep saying no to anything that feels hollow or hyped. Growth matters—but only if we stay honest about why we started.

That’s the path forward. Slow, steady, and rooted in what actually matters.
